Situated in the scenic canton of Sozoranga, in Ecuador's Loja province, the Jumbo family's coffee farm represents a harmonious blend of tradition, progress, and environmental responsibility. What began with a modest plot planted with Typica Criollo by the first generation has since evolved into a focused specialty coffee project, now led by the second generation under the guidance of July Jumbo.
Driven by a desire to improve quality and innovate, the family introduced Sidra varietals to their farm, sourcing seeds from Ecuador's Pichincha region. Every step of the germination and planting process was managed with care, taking full advantage of Sozoranga's distinctive microclimate, which is dry, elevated, and shaped by rugged ridgelines and plateaus, providing ideal conditions for coffee cultivation. In 2024, they introduced post harvest processing at the end of the coffee season, and with plans to incorporate technical guidance and modern processing techniques from the start of the 2025 harvest, the Jumbo family are determined to keep pushing quality forward.
Sozoranga has built a strong reputation for producing high caliber coffee, with numerous growers achieving recognition in national and international competitions, and this coffee is a clear reflection of that. July Jumbo is an incredibly complex and fruit forward coffee, with delicate florals lifting the cup when brewed as filter. As an espresso, it shows us why Sidras are so sought after, bringing layers of defined deep berry and wine like flavours while a chocolatey sweetness coats the palate.
This farm is more than a livelihood. It is a generational legacy defined by dedication, craftsmanship, and a steadfast commitment to excellence, and every cup reflects that.
