Established in 1991, the Nemba Washing Station serves as a central hub for over 3,100 local coffee producers. These farmers typically manage very small plots, averaging about 168 coffee trees each. Alongside coffee, they also cultivate staple crops such as bananas, beans, yams, taro, and cassava.
Because individual landholdings are small and resources limited, producers in this region rely heavily on washing stations like Nemba for processing. Unlike regions in Central and South America where producers may have access to their own milling equipment, most Burundian growers deliver freshly picked cherries to centralized facilities for sorting, blending, and post-harvest processing.
Despite the logistical challenges of sourcing from Burundi, the coffees from this region are celebrated for their vibrant, fruit-forward character. Rich notes reminiscent of fig and Malbec wine, they deliver a lively cup balanced by a bright acidity.
